You might be thinking, “What in the world does Seinfeld’s calendar have to do with writing?” It’s simple. He too is a writer. A writer of comedy. He knows how to make people laugh. He was so good he even got his own TV show that went on for years. Personally, I was never a fan of his, but millions of people are. No, I may not have been a big fan of his show, but it remained on for years.
Here’s the thing. Did he become popular over night or do you think he worked at it several years while he grew and perfected his craft. Obviously that should be a rhetorical question. Very few become famous over night. It takes years of dedication to do so.
So let’s get back to Seinfeld’s calendar. This is someone who decided that in order to become good he need to write at least one joke per day. But how did he hold himself accountable? He did it by use a great big wall calendar. When he wrote his joke for he day he put a red X through that day. After a while he had this chain linking one day to the next. His chain never broke. “He figured his job was to keep that chain going.”
So I want to be like Seinfeld and do a little bit of writing or editing or both each and every day. Just think of what you could accomplish in one year.
