Please welcome this weeks guest Patty Smith Hall for The Journey. She answers the question: How have you seen God work in your writing journey? My writing journey has been one long and winding road(a nod to the Beatles there) full of twists and turns, stopping and starting on a moment’s whims depending on what daughter needed me at the time. But 2004 was a pivotal year for me, the year I was awarded a scholarship to the ACFW National Conference in Denver. At that time, I had been writing … [Read more...]
Day 18: Your Validation Posse
I love this. A validation posse. Before I got into writing seriously I might never have truly understood what this would mean and how important it is as a writer. As for what I do on this site, my validation posse has been those individuals that my writing has somehow touched their life and for those who have left comments to let me know how those words did touch their lives. But writing Mari's book and also my fiction writing, to have just the right posse is more important than I ever … [Read more...]
The Journey with Lena Nelson Dooley
Please welcome this weeks guest Lena Nelson Dooley for The Journey. She answers the question: How have you seen God work in your writing journey? God in My Writing Journey I can’t really tell all He has done, because it would fill more than a month’s worth of blogs. He has been ever-present in all my writing journey. He’s opened a number of doors that probably wouldn’t have been opened without Him. I’ll mention a few. Joyce Hart, of Hartline Literary Agency, and I met at the first American … [Read more...]
Day 154: It Takes What It Takes
Do you have the mentality that no matter what happens in your life that you will do what it takes to succeed at whatever you are doing? I think many of us do and then many of us don't. It's the "I won't give up" way of thinking. I'm sure we've all heard a thousand times how this successful person or that one had received however many 'no's' before that final yes finally happened. It's what makes us stronger. It's the refusal to give in to failure or rejection. If we were all to just give up … [Read more...]
Volunteering
There are so many things we can volunteer for in our life. There are outreach programs, programs for boys or girls or both, church related things, good causes, at a hospital, and the list goes on. When I believe in whatever I'm volunteering for it can make you feel good. I think most people when they volunteer they do it for selfless reasons. They want to help whether it's the needy, the poor, or maybe a group you're apart of. But are their some that do it just for selfish reasons? I have no … [Read more...]
Trying to help where needed
When I volunteer for something it's because my heart is in the right place and I like to give back. I want to help those in need. I want to give of my time because it's the right thing to do. When I was going through my email yesterday, I saw a request for volunteers for a the contest that is getting ready to happen with ACFW. The primary coordinator is in need of category coordinators. ACFW is so much more than just a place for writers to talk and learn about writing. It is a community of … [Read more...]
I’m Back (Man It’s Been A Long Time)
Well, who knew that my break would have taken me this long. Since my last message we have moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Our nephew has gone back home to live with his biological mom. And now I'm back into my writing. It's been so exciting as I completely rewrote out a new outline for my book as I figured out how I needed to proceed forward. I've just started writing out the new scene's and rewriting several of the ones I already had as the book takes on a new turn. I'd like to start a writing … [Read more...]
Day 90: The Wrestling Match
Here's a question for you? Are you ever fully satisfied with yourself? If you say yes, I don't think you're being truthful with yourself. No matter who we are or what we do there is always room to grow. As a writer, I'm still a long way off from being able to write a book with as few of edits as possible. I'm so in the throes of learning this craft to make it the best I can. In the past year since I joined ACFW, I have learned so much on how to improve my writing. I'm still amazed … [Read more...]
Day 70: The Right Age to Write
Do you ever wonder sometimes if you are too old to write? I know several people involved with ACFW that they knew since a very young age that they either wanted to write or that they were meant to write. To put it bluntly: It was the last thing I ever wanted to do. I struggled all through elementary school to the point I was held back in second grade. My grades always consisted of getting C's and H's. You might be asking what in the world is an H letter grade? It simple. It means Having … [Read more...]
Day 65: Why You Don’t Show Your Work to Your Spouse
I have to tell you that as of right now I sit here walking on my treadmill getting ready to go read today's phrase, I had to laugh as I can only imagine what will be said. I guess we'll find out in a second. Here I go... Well, here it is. I thought it best to quote what she said: "Why You Don’t Show Your Work to Your Spouse. When Norris Church Mailer showed her husband, Norman Mailer, the first one hundred pages of a novel she was working on, he said, 'It’s not as bad as I thought it would … [Read more...]
